There are lots of decisions you need to make when you start your own business. Some are easy and some involve research and lots of trial and error. An example of this, for us, and a question we get asked often is what social media is right for my business.
There are plenty: Pintrest, Facebook, LinkedIn, Snap Chat, Twitter. What we learned early on is that each platform offers something different and so a one size fits all approach doesn't apply to social media. This blog will explore the different platforms available and explain who uses them and how you can use them to promote your business.
An easy mistake any business can make it to choose to be on every platform. The danger with this is that you end up spreading yourself too thin and ultimately not using any platform effectively. The reality is that you can't just "be" on social media platforms you actually have to be active on them - that means having and executing a social media content strategy.
For the purpose of this blog I'm going to focus on the four I've highlighted from the recent report showing Australia's most popular social networks as these are the ones we use and have proven effective for our business.

1. Facebook – 15,000,000 users (steady)
2. YouTube – 14,700,000 UAVs
3. WordPress.com – 5,200,000
4. Instagram – 5,000,000 Monthly Active Australian Users (Facebook/ Instagram data)
5. Snapchat – 4,000,000 DAILY Active Australian Users (Snapchat data)
6. Tumblr – 4,000,000
7. LinkedIn – 3,600,000
8. WhatsApp – 3,100,000 Active Australian Users (30% increase since 2015)
9. Twitter – 2,800,000 Monthly Active Australian Users approx
10. TripAdvisor – 2,700,000
1. Facebook continues to be the market leader with 1.8 billion active users. All businesses have the opportunity to set up a Facebook for Business page so it's a great starting point. It allows you to showcase your products or services by sharing photos, videos and updates.
Tip: Facebook for Business have the option of affordable paid advertising and what's even better is you can target your audience so your ad is seen by the people you want to see it.
2. We are new to YouTube however considering visual content is growing exponentially in its popularity and effectiveness then it was an easy decision for us to make. That and the fact it's become the second largest search engine in the world. A Forbes article I recently read summed it up perfectly - being on YouTube will help our business:
3. LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network - it's a site where professionals go to connect. Similar to Facebook it's possible to create a LinkedIn Company Page providing businesses the opportunity to share their story, engage with followers, share career opportunities, and promote and build their company brand.
Tip: LinkedIn provide great analytics on anything you share, you can review these to measure the effectiveness of your updates and gain insights into your followers. With any analytics the power is in using them to inform what you do next.
4. Twitter may be limited to 140 characters however it's another platform that can be powerful for any business. It's a short sharp way for businesses to connect and engage with customers, keep an eye on competitors and to follow brands, experts and influencers. It's an effective way to get and to give information and messages quickly.

Instagram is the next social media platform that we are going to explore for our business. It is a mobile photo-sharing app that has more than 300 million daily active users. It was purchased by Facebook in 2012 and although they attract different audiences they do compliment each other as part of a businesses overall social media strategy. We're looking forward to mastering it for our business.
