The Oxford English Dictionary defines social media as "Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking." I know from working with our client's social media means something different to everyone. For some it means the sites or apps they use like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter and for others, it's another way of communicating to friends, customers, and like-minded colleagues.
What fascinates me is there is a whole new level of language, a glossary of terms, that's been created under the social media heading: social mention - blogs - follower - hashtag - handle - influencers - wow the list really can go on and on.
There are 3 terms that interest me and are an essential inclusion in the overall social media strategy for any small business. In this blog I'll explain what they mean and highlight tips on how to achieve the best results from them.
1. Owned Social Media:
Communication channels that are within your control e.g. websites, blogs, email, social accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. It's the content you create, publish and promote on these channels.
2. Earned Social Media:
Consists of all the conversation and content created and published by somebody else around your brand or product such as press coverage, social media mentions, shares, reviews etc. It's credible and trusted.
3. Paid Social Media:
Consists of any marketing that you pay for in any channel you choose such as Pay Per Click, sponsored social media posts, ad campaigns.
It's pretty safe to say business success is not achieved by implementing one single tactic. There is power in understanding these 3 terms however the real power comes from incorporating all of them into your social media strategy.

Many small businesses are on social media and are committed to incorporating it into their overall marketing strategy. If done properly it can be a cost-effective and targeted way to increase brand awareness, engage with customers and reach new ones to generate business leads.
The reality is it can be overwhelming and there's so much more to it than just having a Facebook Business Page. I hope this blog has provided a bit more detail about 3 types of social media activity you need to be aware of and include in your social media strategy.
