When we started our business Strategic Social Profiles one of the most exciting things was we'd be in control of just about everything. The set up, the name, the logo, our website, our proposals, our clients and of course a whole lot more.
One word kept popping up and it became one word I really wanted to get my head around. KEYWORDS.
So I embarked on a journey of discovery about keywords and in this blog I'll share the important things you need to know about keywords. To begin with I searched for a definition:
"A keyword, in the context of search engine optimisation, is a particular word or phrase that describes the contents of a Web page. Keywords are intended to act as shortcuts that sum up an entire page. Keywords form part of a Web page’s metadata and help search engines match a page with an appropriate search query." technopedia
For a simple word it's actually got a lot of depth. To start with it's important to understand why you need keywords. According to Hubspot there are 3 main reasons:
Broad Keywords versus Long-Tail Keywords
Broad keywords tend to be short words or phrases and although they are relevant to your business or company they may also apply to other businesses within your industry. For our business a broad keyword would be: Marketing.
Long-Tail keywords as the name suggests tend to be longer phrases that are more specific to your business or industry. For our business a long-tail keyword would be: Inbound Marketing Solutions.
Probably most important of all is to understand the significance of keywords to Google. Have you heard of the Google algorithm?
"The formula Google uses to rank the resulting Web pages from a user's query." pcmag
Google want to display the most relevant and authoritative results for its user. So if you want your website or blog to be displayed when a potential customer is looking for your product or service, you need to use keywords as part of your search engine optimisation. We all want to rank higher because the higher you rank, the more traffic and conversions you can hope to receive. Keywords can help you achieve that.
Below are few articles I've found useful about keywords and search engine optimisation - it is an ever-changing topic so you need to keep up to date with it:
