Small Business and Facebook, Is It Still A Match Made In Heaven?

27/11/2019

Did you know that Facebook reaches over 17 million Australians over a one month period?  That's 83% of all Australians! (Roy Morgan).

As a small business, it's fairly evident from these numbers you need to be on Facebook to engage with your customers.

So is Facebook and small business still a match made in heaven?

Is Your Business On Facebook?
According to Roy Morgan research undertaken in May 2019, some interesting things are coming to light in regards to Facebook and the demographics using it and how the younger demographic is trending away from Facebook and onto other platforms.  Morgan's CEO says "...the network appears close to maximising its Australian audience."

The quick takeout:
  • Facebook still has the highest penetration of any social media platform across most age demographics - Pre boomers, Baby Boomers, Gen X's and Gen Y's
  • For Gen Z's - YouTube has now taken over Facebook
  • Instagram , Pinterest and YouTube continue to show strong growth

If you're asking yourself why you need Facebook Business Page, remember that it does have some excellent positives for business that can drive increased sales and profits:
  • it's free to join, simple and straight forward to use.  Set yours up here.
  • you can promote your business, products, services and events for free, as well as allow customers to schedule appointments and provide your contact details
  • it's where your customers are researching and buying
  • you can do paid advertising, and relative to other mediums - at a much lower cost
  • it's designed for multiple types of posted content - video, documents, images
  • you can get in front of your clients and customers everyday
  • you learn about your target audience
  • it helps you build a community
  • lets you provide customer support
  • helps with your Google placement and online profile
  • drives people to your website

Most Australian State Government websites also espouse the benefits of using Facebook for Business.  One site we find helpful is this Queensland Government link.

Simply signing up your business won't drive results.  It takes time and an investment in understanding your customer's pain points and how your brand or service can help them.  You will need to post relevant content regularly. Aim to educate and help your audience.  Involve them in the discussion and listen to what they say, encourage a two-way conversation.

Whilst the list above isn't the only positives Facebook for Business could work for you.  Mari Smith, the "Pied Piper of Facebook" explains some more in-depth reasons to consider.

Whilst Facebook isn't the only platform to use, it's important to do your research and find out where and what platforms your audience are using.

For many businesses, whilst there are always negative stories out there about the varied success of Facebook for their business, for many businesses, Facebook truly is a match made in heaven.
